Title: Screening and disclosing fantasy: rear projection in HitchcockAuthor: Bronfen, ElisabethArticle type: ArticleLanguage: English
Description: Article analysing the use of conspicuously artificial rear projection in the films of Alfred Hitchcock, suggesting that the device disrupts the viewer's emotional involvement and introduces an element of distancing, forming the basis of a 'contract' between director and audience based on mutual acknowledgement. Considers the way the technique highlights characters' projection of their own fantasy on to the world around them, or their responses to a drama projected on to them, and discusses how Hitchcock's cameo appearances contribute to an aesthetic which foregrounds illusion and artifice.
